People who snore often do so to massively irritate their wives, husbands, fiancées, girlfriends, boyfriends and what have you, on purpose. Doing so would increase their chances of finding a new and perhaps better companion. Of course, I’m joking! Honestly though, I love my missus very, very much and I would never dream of being with anyone else.

However if someone like say…Eva Longoria comes calling, I may change my tune lol ;) Alright let’s get back to the topic at hand - snoring causes.

You see, snoring occurs due to obstruction of the air passage. When the air passage is obstructed during sleep, the muscles in your throat would vibrate and the resulting sound is what we all know as snoring.

So, we have established the cause of snoring, but one question remains…Why some people experience blockage in their air passageway (that leads to snoring) while some don’t? Well, here are a few common reasons:

(1) Prone to throat vibrations due to muscle tissues of the airways (the upper part) often coming into contact with one another during breathing while sleeping.

(2) Sleeping flat on the back which can cause the tongue to shift further down right into the back of the mouth, blocking the throat.

(3) Weak throat muscles. People with weak throat muscles often suffer from this problem because when they sleep, the throat closes easily.

(4) Accumulation of fat around the throat area. Overweight people who have snoring problem might want to try losing some excess body fat. The excess fat would push against the throat causing one to snore loudly when asleep. So, losing some weight (excess body fat) might just do the trick.

(5) Smoking can lead to snoring as well. It obstructs the throat and also weakens it.

So these are your typical snoring causes and if you happen to fall into the latter two categories, perhaps you may not need to spend money on general treatments e.g. stop snoring pillow, throat strips, spray, mouthpiece, etc.

One of these works well for the first 3, especially pillows for snoring because they are designed to properly align the spine and head while you’re asleep, this dramatically reduces the vibration in your throat muscles and also allows for better air movement in your passageway.

However, folks in the latter two should try to get rid of those excess fat and/or quit smoking (it’s hellish I know. It took me 2 years to quit the bloody thing!).
